Axis Fellows

Last Updated: October 4, 2026

Axis Fellows is a journalism and workforce-development program focused on training the next generation of reporters while strengthening local newsrooms and expanding reporting capacity.

The program creates a pipeline from high school into the HBCU ecosystem and onward into journalism careers. Fellows gain experience through reporting, newsroom workflows, editorial mentorship, research, interviewing, writing, visual storytelling, and published work produced within a professional news environment.

Axis Fellows is designed to help students and early-career journalists build practical skills, understand how modern newsrooms operate, and develop a portfolio of work that can support college, internship, fellowship, and career opportunities.

For communities and partner institutions, the program creates additional reporting capacity around local government, education, business, health, culture, climate, infrastructure, and other issues that shape daily life. For Axis, it creates a long-term talent pipeline while helping expand the number of journalists prepared to serve local communities.

Universities & the HBCU Ecosystem

Axis News Network works with universities and institutions across the HBCU ecosystem to strengthen journalism education, expand reporting opportunities, and build pathways into media careers. These relationships support student development, newsroom experience, local reporting, research, and workforce-development initiatives that connect education with professional journalism.

Through Axis Fellows and related programs, Axis is building a pipeline that can begin in high school, continue through HBCUs and other universities, and lead into internships, fellowships, newsroom roles, and broader careers across media and information. University partnerships also create opportunities to expand reporting capacity in communities while giving emerging journalists meaningful experience producing work for real audiences.
