A wildfire that erupted on October 15, 2026, in the Pusung Lingker area of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java, Indonesia, has claimed the lives of four firefighters. The blaze, which occurred in a region known for its active volcanoes and tourism, trapped responders as they attempted to contain the flames.
The deceased were identified as Sukaris, a national park civil servant; Wisnu Yuda Pratama and Sefriel Ardiansyah, both employees of a hotel services company; and Hendra Rony Wagiyanta, a state firefighter with Manggala Agni. Two other responders, Munawi and Suraji, sustained severe burns and were evacuated for medical treatment.
Initial reports from the Indonesian National Police noted discrepancies in casualty figures, but later confirmations established four fatalities. The fire, first reported on October 10, was declared contained by October 14. However, on the morning of October 15, smoke reappeared, and a sudden wind gust intensified the blaze, leading to the tragedy.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) issued a statement acknowledging the sacrifice of the victims. The National Civil Service Agency (BKN) announced that Sukaris and Hendra would receive posthumous promotions and benefits.
