U.S. AI Leadership Threatened by New Chinese Model, Warns Former Tech Advisor

By Priya Anand

David Sacks, a former White House AI and cryptocurrency advisor, has raised concerns about the United States potentially losing its leadership in artificial intelligence. His warning comes in the wake of the release of Kimi K3, a new AI model developed by Beijing-based Moonshot AI, which has reportedly surpassed top U.S. models in performance and cost-efficiency.

Kimi K3 has outperformed Anthropic’s Fable 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol in blind coding tests and achieved higher rankings than Opus 4.8 in broader text evaluations. The model operates at approximately 40% lower cost than its American counterparts. Moonshot AI plans to release the model's weights on July 27, allowing for widespread customization.

Sacks criticized current U.S. regulatory trends, including bans on new data centers and federal pre-approval requirements for model releases, as hindrances to innovation. He advocated for a deregulatory approach, emphasizing permissionless innovation and targeted safeguards to maintain the U.S.'s competitive edge in AI.

The emergence of Kimi K3 highlights a shift towards open-weight AI models from China, which are becoming increasingly competitive on the global stage. This trend presents a strategic challenge to the U.S., which has traditionally relied on proprietary frontier models to maintain its AI dominance.
