Trump Signs Order to Rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America'

President Donald Trump has issued an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' in all U.S. federal government references. The order, signed on August 27, 2026, directs the Interior Secretary to implement the change within 30 days.

The executive order, titled 'Honoring the American History of the Great Lakes and Renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America,' cites the United States' significant investment in the Great Lakes ecosystem, totaling nearly $4 billion over the past decade. The order frames the renaming as a recognition of the lake's importance to American commerce, defense, and heritage.

However, the renaming applies only to U.S. federal documents and does not affect international or Canadian usage. Legal experts note that the U.S. has authority to change geographic names for federal purposes but cannot compel other nations to adopt the new name.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has dismissed the renaming effort, affirming that Lake Ontario's name remains unchanged in Canada. He emphasized the lake's historical and cultural significance, rooted in its Indigenous origins.

This move comes amid ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada, with analysts viewing it as a symbolic gesture rather than a practical change.
