Trump Showcases White House Helipad and Ballroom Projects

On August 19, 2026, President Trump conducted a 30-minute tour for reporters, highlighting two significant construction projects at the White House: a new helipad and an East Wing ballroom. Trump emphasized the quality and durability of the projects, stating, “we get the best stuff.”

The helipad, located on the South Lawn, is designed to accommodate Marine One. It features a 100-foot-wide granite surface with a carved presidential seal. Trump noted the granite's durability, claiming it can withstand substantial pressure and has a long lifespan. The helipad, financed by Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin subsidiary, is estimated to cost between $5 million and $6 million. Construction is being expedited by Clark Construction, with additional costs of $875,000 to ensure completion before a state visit in September.

In addition to the helipad, Trump showcased the East Wing ballroom project. The 90,000-square-foot facility is designed with high-security features, including impenetrable steel and a drone-proof roof. The project, initially estimated to cost between $200 million and $400 million, has seen costs rise to approximately $600 million, involving some taxpayer funding despite claims of private financing. Legal challenges have arisen, with lower courts blocking above-ground construction due to a lack of congressional approval. The administration is appealing to the Supreme Court, citing security needs.
