Trump Backs Paxton in Texas Senate Race Amid GOP Concerns

President Trump visited Houston on August 27, 2026, to bolster Attorney General Ken Paxton's U.S. Senate campaign, underscoring Republican efforts to maintain control of a pivotal seat. The visit included a fundraising event aimed at energizing GOP support as early voting approaches.

Paxton's campaign has received significant backing, including a $1.7 million ad buy from a super PAC linked to Senator Ted Cruz, announced on August 21, 2026. This infusion of funds highlights the GOP's strategic focus on Texas amid concerns of a potential Democratic flip.

Despite the support, Paxton faces a formidable challenge from Democratic candidate James Talarico. In the second quarter of 2026, Talarico raised $31.6 million, nearly four times Paxton's $9 million. Since 2025, Talarico has amassed $72 million in campaign funds, compared to Paxton's $16.8 million.

Federal Election Commission data reveals that Paxton's campaign received $9.25 million in total receipts from April 2025 to June 2026, with $7.49 million spent. As of June 2026, Talarico held $23.3 million in cash on hand, significantly outpacing Paxton.
