Tesla unveiled its second-generation Roadster at SpaceX's test facility in McGregor, Texas, on October 15, 2026, with a dramatic demonstration involving aerial maneuvers. The event was livestreamed, drawing significant attention to the vehicle's capabilities.
The Roadster, unmanned during the demonstration, ascended a curved ramp and inverted, held by a multi-mode suction system. It then utilized SpaceX-derived cold-gas thrusters to flip mid-air before landing upright. The car also performed a 'kickflip' and appeared to hover briefly, clearing a line of Tesla vehicles.
Performance metrics highlighted by Tesla included a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 0.81 seconds. The company also claimed a range exceeding 300 miles and a top speed over 230 mph. Engineers mentioned an initial top speed of 214 mph, with a future version potentially reaching 330 mph.
Production of the Roadster is targeted for 2028, though no pricing details were disclosed. Tesla introduced three configurations: the 'Performance' version for road use, the 'Thrust' version with rear thrusters, and the 'Rocket' version featuring full-around thrusters for brief flight capabilities.
Elon Musk described the Roadster as 'the best of the last human-driven cars,' emphasizing its advanced features and performance.
