Sanctioned Russian Tanker Spills Oil Near Oman's Coast

A sanctioned Russian tanker, the Caroline Bezengi, is reportedly leaking oil in a marine conservation area off the coast of Oman. The spill highlights environmental risks associated with aging vessels used to circumvent Western sanctions.

Satellite imagery from July 2 to July 13, 2026, shows an oil slick near al-Qibliyyah Island in the Dhofar Governorate, confirmed by independent analysts. The Caroline Bezengi, part of Russia's shadow fleet, last broadcast its position on June 11, 2026, and loaded oil in Novorossiysk.

The tanker, owned by Shanghai-based Rentoor Shipmanagement, encountered operational issues on June 8, 2026, near Mukalla, Yemen. It is under sanctions by the EU, UK, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Canada, linked to PJSC Sovcomflot through Sun Ship Management and SCF Management Services Cyprus.

Oman's Maritime Security Centre and Environment Authority have not commented, and Rentoor Shipmanagement has not responded to inquiries. The spill's cause remains unconfirmed, with possibilities ranging from mechanical failure to conflict-related damage.
