Russian Strikes on Odesa and Merchant Ships Escalate Tensions

By David Okafor

Russian military strikes in the Odesa region have resulted in the deaths of 28 people in July 2026, according to local authorities. This escalation includes attacks on merchant ships operating in the Black Sea, prompting international condemnation.

On July 15, 2026, a Russian attack in Odesa city killed three individuals and damaged a civilian vessel flying the Marshall Islands flag. This incident is part of a broader pattern of aggression in the region.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) issued a statement on July 13, 2026, condemning the series of attacks on civilian merchant ships in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The IMO has called for the protection of seafarers and an end to these hostilities.

Earlier, on June 11, 2026, two foreign cargo vessels flagged in Barbados and Panama were damaged in a Russian drone attack in the Black Sea corridor. No casualties were reported in that incident.
