Peak Energy to Build First U.S. Sodium-Ion Battery Plant in California

By Adrian Cole

Peak Energy announced on July 8, 2026, its plans to construct the first commercial-scale U.S. manufacturing facility for sodium-ion battery systems in Sacramento, California. The new plant will be located at Metro Air Park, occupying a 183,000-square-foot space, and is expected to generate 239 jobs with a capital investment of $71 million.

The facility aims to produce three to four battery systems daily, each comprising nearly 8,000 sodium-ion cells. This development follows Peak Energy's successful demonstration of grid-scale sodium-ion storage systems, including a >3 MWh system deployed in July 2025 at SolarTAC in Colorado.

In March 2026, Peak Energy, in collaboration with RWE Americas, deployed the first sodium-ion battery on the MISO grid in Wisconsin. This system reportedly reduces auxiliary power use by 90% and cuts lifetime storage costs by $70 per kWh compared to lithium-ion systems.

These initiatives align with recent U.S. policy efforts aimed at bolstering domestic battery production, such as H.R. 1 and the β€œOne Big Beautiful Bill.”
