Obama Criticizes Trump Administration's Investigation of Ilhan Omar

Former President Barack Obama has publicly condemned the Trump administration's investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar, describing it as a 'transparent' effort to intimidate the congresswoman. In a statement posted on social media on October 18, 2026, Obama criticized the criminal probe as 'appalling,' asserting that the federal government is unjustly targeting Omar because of her criticisms of President Donald Trump.

The investigation, led by Homeland Security, involved an early-morning raid on Omar's Washington, D.C., residence on October 12, 2026. During the operation, federal agents executed a search warrant as part of an immigration fraud investigation, seizing Omar's cellphone and retrieving documents. The probe is examining whether Omar or her late father misrepresented information on immigration paperwork to secure U.S. citizenship in 2000, with a focus on her father's military background in Somalia.

This investigation follows a similar review conducted in 2019, which concluded with no evidence of wrongdoing and did not lead to a full investigation. Despite this, the current inquiry has intensified, with over a dozen grand jury subpoenas issued to Omar's relatives and associates.
