Nigel Farage Faces Inquiry Over Crypto Donations Amid UK Political Scrutiny

By Marcus Ellison

Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, is facing a formal investigation by the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner following revelations that he received a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne. This gift, reportedly intended for private security, was not declared within the required period.

In addition to the personal gift, Harborne contributed approximately £12 million to Reform UK in 2025, including a record £9 million single donation, marking the largest ever by a living person to a UK political party.

In response to concerns about the influence of cryptocurrency in politics, the UK government announced a moratorium on crypto donations to political parties on March 25, 2026. This ban applies retrospectively, requiring parties to return any unlawful crypto donations within 30 days. The moratorium is part of broader reforms aimed at preventing foreign interference, which also include a £100,000 annual cap on donations from overseas electors.

Reform UK is the only major party accepting cryptocurrency donations, which it processes through an offshore platform not regulated in the UK, raising transparency concerns. Farage is also under scrutiny for allegedly lobbying the Bank of England in September 2025 shortly after receiving crypto-linked funds, an action currently being assessed for potential breaches of lobbying rules.
