Moderna's experimental mRNA cancer vaccine, developed in collaboration with Merck, has shown promising results in reducing cancer recurrence, according to recent data presented at the ASCO Annual Meeting. The vaccine, used in combination with Keytruda, demonstrated a 49% reduction in the risk of cancer recurrence or death and a 59% reduction in the risk of distant metastases or death in patients with high-risk stage III/IV melanoma.

The announcement has led to a significant surge in Moderna's stock price. Shares jumped approximately 75% in premarket trading, reaching $110 from a prior close of $62.96. This marks a substantial increase, reflecting investor optimism about the vaccine's potential impact on cancer treatment.

The broader biopharmaceutical sector has also experienced a rally, with the news contributing to a positive market sentiment. Moderna's stock has seen a year-to-date gain of about 59% as of early June 2026, indicating sustained investor confidence in the company's innovative approach to cancer treatment.
