Mike Browning, a pioneering figure in the death metal scene and co-founder of the bands Morbid Angel and Nocturnus, has died at the age of 62. Browning, known for his distinctive drumming and vocal style, passed away on July 13, 2026, as confirmed by Morbid Angel in a public tribute.

Browning was born on May 26, 1964, in Tampa, Florida. He co-founded Morbid Angel in 1983, a band that became one of the foundational acts in the death metal genre. Browning played a crucial role in the band's early development, performing on their initial demos and the unreleased album 'Abominations of Desolation,' recorded in 1986.

After leaving Morbid Angel due to internal conflicts in 1986, Browning went on to form Nocturnus in 1987. This band was notable for incorporating science fiction themes and keyboards into death metal, with their debut album 'The Key' (1990) being a landmark in progressive death metal.

In 2013, Browning revived the band as Nocturnus AD, continuing to innovate within the genre. The group released 'Paradox' in 2019 and 'Unicursal' in 2024, maintaining Browning's influence in the metal community up until his death.

The metal community has expressed widespread mourning, with tributes from musicians such as Dirk Verbeuren of Megadeth, who described Browning as both a musical legend and a genuinely kind person.
