Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has been spotted taking business calls on a jet ski while wearing Meta's smart glasses, priced at approximately $800. This anecdote highlights his confidence in smart glasses as a future replacement for smartphones, despite significant financial losses reported by Meta's Reality Labs division.

Reality Labs, which focuses on virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies, posted a full-year operating loss of $19.193 billion in 2025, up from $17.729 billion in 2024. In the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, the division recorded a $6.021 billion loss on $955 million in revenue.

In the first quarter of 2026, Reality Labs reported an operating loss of $4.028 billion on $402 million in revenue. Despite these losses, Zuckerberg remains optimistic about the growth potential of smart glasses, noting that sales have tripled over the past year.

Zuckerberg has stated that billions of people wear glasses or contacts, and he envisions a future where AI glasses are commonplace. Meta continues to invest heavily in this technology, with plans to focus on making VR a profitable ecosystem over time.
