Kenya Met Warns of Dry July, Urges Farmers to Conserve Moisture

The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) has issued a warning that most regions in Kenya will experience dry and sunny conditions throughout July, with a steady decline in soil moisture. This forecast, detailed in the July Farming Outlook, advises farmers to adjust their irrigation, water usage, and crop management strategies to mitigate the impact of these conditions.
While the dry weather poses challenges, it also offers a window of opportunity for the harvesting, drying, and safe storage of mature crops, particularly maize, in Western Kenya counties such as Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, and Busia, as well as in Machakos and Embu.
In contrast, coastal counties including Taita Taveta, Kilifi, Malindi, Kwale, and Lamu are expected to receive near- to above-average rainfall. The Central Highlands and Nairobi may experience occasional light showers and cloudy skies.
The official climate outlook from the Kenya Meteorological Department, dated June 30, 2026, corroborates these predictions, highlighting generally dry and sunny conditions across much of the country. However, intermittent cool and cloudy weather with light rains is anticipated in the Central Highlands, Nairobi, and portions of the Southeastern Lowlands, Western Kenya, and Central Rift Valley.
