Tens of thousands of Iranians assembled at Tehran's Grand Mosalla to mourn Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader for nearly 37 years, who was killed in a U.S.-Israeli airstrike on February 28, 2026. The funeral, postponed due to ongoing conflict, commenced on July 3, 2026.
Reports suggest that hundreds of thousands of mourners filled the complex, with estimates indicating that millions could participate over the coming days. Attendees chanted slogans like “Death to America” and “Death to Israel,” reflecting widespread calls for vengeance.
Khamenei’s coffin, draped with a flag from the Shrine of Imam Hussein in Karbala, was displayed alongside those of family members also killed in the strike. Security was tight, with parts of Tehran cordoned off and a heavy presence of armored vehicles and snipers.
Iranian officials emphasized the narrative of strength and continuity, promoting Khamenei's death as martyrdom and affirming his son, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, as his successor. The ceremonies drew foreign delegations from over 100 countries, underscoring international diplomatic interest.
