Harbert Management Corporation (HMC), a private alternative asset manager based in Birmingham, has acquired the Mid-Georgia Cogen facility located in Kathleen, Georgia. This cogeneration plant, which began operations in 1998, has a capacity of approximately 317 megawatts according to Harbert's press release, although Utility Dive reports it as 323 megawatts.

The facility operates as a peaker plant under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Georgia Power. A new 20-year PPA will commence in 2028, ensuring the plant's continued role in providing firm capacity and energy to the grid. Additionally, the plant supplies thermal output to an adjacent Frito-Lay manufacturing facility, supporting its frying and cooking processes.

The acquisition received approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission in July 2026. Harbert Power's head, Claude Estes, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting the company's commitment to supporting partners in managing significant load growth in the state.

The plant's infrastructure includes two 107-megawatt Westinghouse combustion turbines, a 105-megawatt steam turbine, and a 1.2-megawatt back-pressure steam turbine. Harbert Power has deployed over $13 billion in capital across various energy sectors and manages about $7.9 billion in regulatory assets.
