New York Governor Kathy Hochul has expressed strong confidence in the security measures in place for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final between Argentina and Spain, scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium. Her assurance is based on a comprehensive preparedness effort involving over 1,000 trainings, exercises, and assessments conducted by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies.
The preparations included 81 courses organized by the Office of Emergency Management and exercises at 993 locations by the Office of Counter Terrorism. These efforts also involved assessments of 240 infrastructure sites, including stadiums, transit hubs, malls, and colleges.
To ensure security during the event, the State Emergency Operations Center was activated from June 10 through July 20, 2026, covering all World Cup match days at the venue. This activation was part of a broader strategy to enhance coordination among state, local, and federal partners.
Governor Hochul, alongside New York City Mayor, highlighted the extensive planning that has been underway for years, which included table-top exercises and reinforced security presence. The security measures will be supported by the NYPD, State Police, MTA police, and the National Guard Task Force Empire Shield, focusing on transit hubs and other key locations.
Additional preparations by city and state officials include the implementation of dedicated shuttle lanes, restricted street access on match days, and increased medical and emergency management capacity. The city's Emergency Operations Center and notification systems have also been activated to ensure swift communication during the event.
