By David Okafor

Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema commenced a state visit to France on July 19, 2026, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between the two nations. The visit, which will last until July 22, 2026, involves discussions aimed at bolstering economic and military cooperation.
Oligui Nguema is accompanied by a delegation of over 80 business leaders and political officials, highlighting the economic and political significance of the trip. Key areas of focus include the local transformation of Gabon’s manganese resources, employment generation, and the modernization of the Trans-Gabon Railway.
This visit follows French President Emmanuel Macron's trip to Libreville in November 2025, where both leaders signed agreements on defense cooperation and resource management. The current state visit marks an elevation from Oligui Nguema's previous official visit in May 2024, signifying Gabon's growing international stature post the August 2023 coup.
The visit also reflects France's strategic efforts to maintain strong ties with Gabon, even as its relations with other francophone African countries face challenges.
