FIFA has officially opened an investigation into the conduct of Argentina's players and staff following the World Cup final against Spain, held on July 20, 2026. The decision comes after several confrontations were reported at the end of the match.
According to FIFA's statement, a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor has been appointed under Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code to assess potential breaches related to the post-match incidents. The investigation will focus on actions such as Leandro Paredes allegedly grabbing Spain's Eric García by the throat and throwing Gavi to the ground, and Nahuel Molina reportedly striking Rodri in the stomach.
Additional altercations involved Argentina's assistant coach Roberto Ayala, who was seen engaging physically with opposing players. These incidents add to the scrutiny following Argentina's semi-final match against England, where players displayed a politically sensitive banner referencing the Falkland Islands, which is also under review.
The investigation could result in suspensions for individual players or coaching staff and financial penalties for the Argentine Football Association. Spanish-language media have confirmed that FIFA is examining match reports and video footage to determine if sanctions are warranted.
