Fertilizer Profits Surge Amid Iowa Water Pollution Concerns

As Iowa contends with increasing nitrate pollution in its drinking water, fertilizer manufacturers CF Industries and Nutrien are reporting substantial profit gains. The two companies, which together account for 55% of U.S. nitrogen-based fertilizer production, saw their combined profits reach $754 million in the first quarter of 2026. This marks a 120% surge in net earnings year-over-year.
The financial success of these firms comes amid significant environmental and economic challenges in Iowa. Des Moines Water Works, the state's largest water utility, has been operating a nitrate-removal plant at a cost of approximately $10,000 to $16,000 per day, accumulating nearly $2 million in expenses this year alone to maintain safe drinking water standards.
Fertilizer prices have also soared, with increases of 51% to 64% for various products since early 2025. This has placed additional financial pressure on Iowa's farmers, who are already burdened by rising input costs.
The fertilizer industry's consolidation has drawn scrutiny, with CF Industries and Nutrien, along with other major players, controlling 75% of domestic production. Allegations of anticompetitive behavior have led to class-action lawsuits and an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.
