A catastrophic flash flood along the Bhotekoshi River in Nepal on August 26, 2026, has resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands missing, including dozens of U.S. citizens. The disaster, triggered by a glacial collapse or avalanche, has severely impacted villages, infrastructure, and hydropower projects.
As of August 28, Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported 538 bodies recovered, though other sources cite varying death tolls. The Nepal Police have confirmed that 2,381 individuals remain unaccounted for, including 644 foreign nationals. Among the missing are 65 U.S. citizens, with other nationalities including 178 Indians and 53 Ukrainians.
The U.S. government has identified approximately 90 Americans as unaccounted for, with no confirmed fatalities. Three Americans have been rescued, and many of the missing were reportedly on pilgrimages to Mount Kailash in Tibet.
Nepal has established an Emergency Response Team to coordinate search and rescue efforts and has accepted limited international assistance from countries including India, China, and Australia.
