Data Centers Emerge as Key Targets in Global Conflicts
By David Okafor

Data centers in the Gulf, Russia, and Ukraine have become focal points in military conflicts, reflecting their critical role in modern infrastructure. Recent attacks underscore a strategic shift in warfare, targeting digital assets alongside traditional physical infrastructure.
In March 2026, Iranian drone strikes targeted Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. This attack disabled two of the three availability zones in the ME-CENTRAL-1 region, affecting core services such as EC2 and S3 across the Gulf. This marked the first confirmed military strike on hyperscale cloud infrastructure, highlighting data centers as high-value targets.
In the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, Ukrainian forces have targeted Russian data centers since October 8, 2026. A notable strike on a Yandex data center in Sasovo significantly reduced bot-generated traffic, impacting services across Russia. These actions indicate a deliberate campaign to disrupt digital infrastructure, with broad implications for both military strategy and civilian services.
