AI Safety Agency Head Chris Fall Resigns After Three Months

By Adrian Cole

Chris Fall, the director of the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), has resigned after just three months in the position, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. Fall's departure was confirmed on July 20, 2026, with no official reason provided for his resignation.

Arvind Raman, who was recently confirmed as the director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will take over as acting director of CAISI while continuing his duties at NIST. Raman was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 18, 2026, and assumed his role at NIST on June 30, 2026.

CAISI is a critical federal body responsible for testing and evaluating commercial AI systems, focusing on areas such as cybersecurity and biosecurity. The agency was involved in recent regulatory actions, including a temporary export control on Anthropic's AI models, which was lifted following CAISI's assessments.

The resignation of Fall marks another leadership change within the Trump administration's AI oversight framework, raising questions about the continuity of AI policy and standards amid increased regulatory scrutiny.
