AHRQ Halts Grant Funding, Citing Federal Government's Best Interest

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has ceased continuation funding for 67 previously awarded health-care improvement grants. The decision, communicated in letters sent to researchers in mid-July 2026, was justified by the agency as being in the 'best interest of the federal government.'
The letters indicated that the relevant programs and funding contracts have been canceled, resulting in the unavailability of funds. Only four of these communications explicitly mentioned the 'best interest' rationale. The AHRQ has not provided a detailed explanation of this phrase or a comprehensive list of the canceled grants.
According to the letters, AHRQ is realigning its research priorities to focus on areas such as patient safety, telehealth, and digital health tools, among others. Despite this, some of the canceled projects, including those related to antibiotic resistance, appear to align with these stated priorities, leading to criticisms of incoherence in the agency's rationale.
AHRQ's decision has raised questions about the criteria used to determine the continuation of funding and the impact on ongoing research projects. The Department of Health and Human Services, under which AHRQ operates, has not elaborated further on the decision.
