Aaron Rodgers Criticizes Buccaneers' Field for Player Safety Concerns
By Cameron Tate

Aaron Rodgers, quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has called for the NFL to examine the playing surface at Raymond James Stadium following his team's overtime victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 18, 2026. Rodgers, who threw the game-winning touchdown, described the field as "one of the worst playing surfaces in the league."
Rodgers highlighted his concerns during a postgame press conference, emphasizing the importance of player safety. He noted that he had previously sustained two injuries at the stadium, which he attributed to the field conditions. In 2008, Rodgers injured his shoulder, and in 2014, he suffered a calf injury, though he did not miss games in either instance.
The NFL and NFLPA have been working to improve field safety, with updated playing-surface requirements introduced in December 2025. These mandates require teams to adopt approved metrics and styles by 2026, with full compliance expected by 2028.
The field at Raymond James Stadium, which uses natural grass, is also shared with the University of South Florida's football team. Rodgers' comments echo previous criticisms he made about field conditions, which have led to changes by some teams.
